CAV6.6 on its last legs

Postby kirkfrey » Mon Feb 18, 2013 2:55 pm

I think that my CAV 6.6's are on their last legs :( I currently have 2 CAV 6.6's and a VM-1 for video distribution. I have 2x CAT5e runs to each location (one for the keypad and one for the VM-1).

Any ideas on what would be a good replacement system that wouldn't set me back an arm and a leg? While I'd rather not, I could run more wire to all of the locations, if needed.

Any thoughts appreciated...

Hi Kirk,

Just curious what indicates it's on it's last leg? Failing amps?

If so, it might be more cost effective to have them repaired by Russound.

Otherwise, Russound has newer models that now support 8 zones. MCA-C5 series.

We had a lightning strike last year in June and misc things have been failing over time - I had to fix an IR distribution issue with the port that sends all commands from all zones; I had a couple of the Uno's die; now it seems that a couple more zone's are also failing the IR... They are $300 each to repair and I have 2. I'm just wondering if its time to move to something newer given how old they are. I'm a bit worried that something else is going to go wrong and I'll basically be throwing away the money.

I checked their website and don't see the Sphere stuff. I had been told that there wasn't a big uptake on it so I am wondering if I would be investing into an already obsolete unit. I wondered about the MCA line, does the Cinemar plugin work with that out of the box?

What other solutions are there out there?

also, all my speaker cabling is home run'd back to my wiring closet.

Hi Kirk,

Yeah -that makes sense.

I think the MCA-C5 series would be a good subsititute for the CAV66.

Just make sure the wiring is similar and that all amp outputs that you need exist on them. They have a lot of new models since the CAV that may fit your bill.

Your existing CAV plugin will work with the MCA-C5.

Anyone out there using the MCA-5 and happy with it?

Is there something else that works as well/better value for the money?
