iTouch whole house audio question

Postby homer » Sat Apr 12, 2008 12:52 pm

I saw the cool DVDLobby iTouch/iPhone web app for controlling a DVD library and was wondering if there was a whole house audio solution for the iTouch/iPhone. I just bought an iTouch and love it. I would really like to use it to control a multizone whole house audio system.

My application:
1) I would like to use my iTouch to select music and control zone volume from anywhere in my house.
2) I would like to select music from my PC and/or potentially internet radio/XM radio.
3) I have speaker wire run from 6 zones to a central cabinet.

question:
1) Is there a Cinemar solution for my application and if so what Cinemar products and/or third party hardware would I need to purchase? I saw the DVDLobby package but wasn’t sure about controlling music.

homer,

Welcome to the forum.

All the tools exist today to build whatever your heart desires within the iTouch/iPhone. We simply did the upfront work for you with regards to DVDLobby.

There are samples that you can learn from and certainly a large number of forum members that can assist with questions.

I would identify the hardware you plan to use. Ideally you will be selecting a whole house audio system like Russound that we natively support.

Mario,

Thanks for the reply. That's good news. I've done a lot of Delphi and database programming but not any web programming although I'm familiar with the concepts. What Cinemar products should I buy to get me the software I need to create a whole house audio solution using say the Russound hardware?

Thanks again.

Jay

Jay,

If you only plan on developing for the iphone/itouch then you would need MLServer 3 and the Russound Cav/caa/cam plugin.

Most likely, though, you'll want to add MainLobby for control from any other PC based machine.

Obviously, if you want access to weather data, you'll want to include WeatherLobby 3. For movie selection, DVDLobby Pro 3.

Keep us posted of your progress Homer. I'd love to see our iPhone/iTouch community grow and begin to share files.

One last question for now. I'm familiar with programming but never did any web programming. How difficult do you think it would be (and what language) to get a whole house audio app working and is this something Cinemar may release like they did with DVD lobby?

Hi Homer,

I think someone even without programming skills could do some things.

It's difficult to tell how well anyone will pick it up.

The best way to find out is to give it a dry run. You'll find sample HTML files in MLSErver\HTML\iPhone folder.

I'd also recommend looking through the Apple Dev Center. You may be able to use your AppleID from itunes to gain access:
https://developer.apple.com/webapps/

There's a lot of good examples. The cool part is they have preconstructed objects that users are already familiar with on the iPhone that takes little programming to do.

We've got quite a lot on our plate to dig into this area right now. Many of our core products are going through development. The pieces are there though. It would be difficult for Cinemar to develop something that will work for everyone in this arena as well. So it would have to be somewhat customized by the user at some point.

I'm going to start working on Iphone integration this week. The idea that I can just use my iphone to change channels, watch a movie, play music is awesome! And since I can have variables to know the stats of all the devices, I don't have to worry about accidentaly turning the TV off because it didn't know it was already on. Plus this will be a great demo feature when selling it to customers. :D

Scott,

That's great to hear.

We're pretty surprised that there are not more users interested in jumping on the bandwagon.
