I already run a linux box 24/7 as my server/router/firewall/X10 control system. I hated having to power up a windows box just to run a DVDLobby client. This elimnates the windows server box.

More stable? Probably not. The system itself is more stable, and has run for over a year at a time without a reboot. MLServer is still what it is. It just THINKS it's running on a windows box :P

Consider VMWare... it's FREE now! It has been very reliable in the HS2 environment I've been using it in for a while now. I'd expect that to be more reliable than WINE for this purpose. Only "issue" I'm aware of is the 4-serial-port limit.

:D

Wine isn't really an emulator. It's more of a surrogate for windows-reliant programs. I checked out vmware, it's a virtual machine and requires WAY more horsepower than I am willing to provide. I am running wine/mlserver on a 500mhz celeron with less than 3% cpu load.
I e-mailed cinemar and asked them for the source code so I could use winelib to port the server directly to linux. I received no response.
Now that I have a cobbled-up version running, I probably won't pursue the matter.

Interesting. Question is: can ML CLIENT run under Linux/Wine? I have some Progear's with Win98 that are really pushed to the max running ML. I was thinking about kicking them up to XP but I can't believe XP could run ML any faster. Anoldman, any suggestions/guidance on running the ML client under Linux for a real Linux-newbie?

Wysocki, Make sure you are using the very latest MainLobby client and server.

The client over the last several updates has gotten quite a bit more efficient.

I highly doubt that a Wine / Linux solution will be any more efficient than straight XP / Win98. Would love to be proven wrong. And, also very unlikely that it is any more reliable (very likely not as reliable a XP).

But you know "Wine Lobby" would be a good idea.... Oh, wrong kind of Wine.
Thanks!
