Let me start with a bunch of disclaimers.

I’m out of my league in this forum. I’m not a programmer, can’t script, don’t know Flash or HTML, avoid Photoshop, and (probably most distressing) I don’t have any Y chromosomes. But I’m going to make myself post anyway (oh gawd). Just maybe, there’s some girlish newbie like me who would benefit.

A few months ago, I got roped into opening up my home to the public for a tour of Downtown Austin living. Since I had docents lined up to handle the physical design aesthetics of my home, I was freed up to demo home automation. And I did, to somewhere between 800 to 1000 unsuspecting strangers on a Sunday afternoon. I can’t tell you how much fun I had.

Anyway, in preparation for that event, I built a few MainLobby scenes to front-end HomeSeer. The design goal was for home automation to appear very friendly, disarming, and easy. I wanted people to be unintimidated. I wanted them to press ML buttons themselves and get that “wow” experience on their own.

There’s nothing here that’s breakthrough with respect to functionality (MainLobby or HomeSeer). No custom graphics either. And the alignment of the graphic items is atrocious. But with the MainLobby toolset, I was able to pull this together in a matter of hours. And I suppose that’s the ultimate point. Even I can do it (right, Smooth).

Problem posting

Postby mwhistle » Wed Aug 10, 2005 11:55 am

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to post screen shots properly. Hence, only one scene in the prior post.

Are my files too large? Is there a better way?

Maximum upload file size is 1MB. How many were you trying to upload? Did you get an error?

mwhistle, if you use a photo editing program, you can resize those down to 640x480 or 800x600 and they'll be smaller - easier to see in a web browser and will take up less space - especially if you lower the JPG "quality" a bit.

There are MANY free photo editing programs, such as IRFANVIEW, Fresh Devices editor, and others. I searched for "free photo software" and got a LOT of hits.

HTH!

Thanks gentlemen.

I knows it pretty lame but I edited my post and attached a Word file with the screenshots.

Even after resizing, I was unable to attach more than three jpgs, even though the grand total of them all was only about 650KB.

Maybe I have more restrictive limits on my user profile????

If I can figure out a more elegant way to post, I'll do another edit.

While you may feel singled out sometimes... this is not the case here. This forum simply has a 3 file limit for attachments.

Great work, very simple and elegant.

I think those achieve the "wow" affect VERY nicely! Great work! :D

I have been able to pull something much less "wow-full" in a matter of hours also -- about 1000 hrs!

I wish I had known about your open house so I could have come by to witness your ML scenes in person.

Great job from another Austin ML user!

Thanks AccessX10!

Postby mwhistle » Wed Aug 10, 2005 6:50 pm

That's was darn nice of you AccessX10. Big thanks!

Ohmmm, can I impose on you once again? Since I didn't make the postings, I can't edit the description field on the jpgs. Would you be willing to cut and paste those bits from the Word File? Pretty please?

I owe you one (or three).

And I thought I was the only pioneer in town.
My house is in "perpetual open house" mode for HomeSeer and Cinemar types. Come on over anytime. Feel free to PM.
