New Installation/Connection Issue

Postby McGrinch » Sun Jan 16, 2011 4:09 pm

I am just getting started with my ML installation and integration with my equipment. I thought I'd get Weatherlobby up and running first to score some points with the wife by seeing something on the touchscreens, rather than remembering the holes in the walls for months before I got the screens in!

However, I have entered my locations and hit the update now button, but no weather data is pulling in. In fact, a lot of the variables that should be populating are not even in the variable list.

I am not sure if this is a Weatherlobby issue or a network issue. Because I live in west central Texas, connectivity options are limited. My wife says we actually live 2 exits past the middle of nowhere! Thus, I am using an aircard in a laptop and sharing the connection through Microsoft's ICS. My MLServer box is connected to the laptop and sees the internet when I open Internet Explorer. MLServer apparently sees it because I can download and install ML Components.

However, I am wondering if ML COMPLETELY sees the internet. I configured it to send me an email if MLServer restarts, and have manually restarted it several times with no email. So I am wondering if the weather data isn't being obtained at all.

The _ipaddress caught my attention as a potential issue:
_connectionstate = 1
_connectionstatus = online
_ipaddress = 127.0.0.1

I am using MLServer 3.75.221 and WeatherLobby 3.90.30.

I also have been reading about an Intelicast subscription, but am not sure how to sign up for that.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Kevin

First, make sure UAC is turned off on your Windows machine.

If it isn't, you'll need to reinstall all applications.

Next, go into MLSERVER'S plugins window and double-click MLWeatherLobby. From the EVENTS tab click START LOGGING. Then hit the update Now button and see what posts to the EVENTS log.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think that UAC is an issue as I am using XP Pro. I wasn't sure what UAC was, and when I Googled it, the responses I saw appeared to be Vista (and beyond) related.

The only event that logs when I click "update now" is:

Date & Time --- ProcessCommand - active~USTX0255

Thanks,
Kevin

If it helps, here are all of my WeatherLobby variables.

Note that 192.168.1.200 is the ip address of the laptop with an aircard that provides my internet connection.

The MLServer is connected to it by Microsoft's ICS. The MLServer has a static IP of 192.168.1.210 with the default gateway of 192.168.1.200 to see the internet.

Is MLWorker running on the ML Server? Look at it and see if updates are happening. Look at the variables in MLWeather Section on MLServer. Are they being updated?
Thanks!

I'll check MLWorker tonight when I get home. I can add/change cities and they get updated in the variables, but none of the internet related information (weather information) is updating.

I am now wondering if there is a port issue with 6246 on my laptop with the aircard. Do I need to manually open a port for ML to communicate to my laptop/aircard?

I am assuming a command like PING 192.168.1.200:6246 should work to tell me if it is open or not.

I still haven't gotten any emails from MLServer when it reboots, though I have shut it down several times in the last couple of days. This is what still makes me think there is a connectivity issue of some kind, even though MLServer can download and install ML components.

Thanks!

A few things to consider.

port 6246 is the port MLServer uses to server graphics to your client. YOu say your laptop has teh aircard in it and it's address is .200.

You then said your mlserver has a static ip of .210.

Port 6246 would be the port that .210 serves images to MLClient. Where is the Cinemar client front end running? The laptop?

Anyway, in all your URLs below it shows the url as .200 which is the laptop address, I would think it should be .210.

When you look in MLServer under options/networking from the menu, what is your IP address for the server? Make sure it is .210.

The port 6246 issue would have nothing to do with your internet connection and 6246 is not the port MLServer retrieves wheather data using. I would assume that is a standard http/https port. Now ICS may be blocking the port, but ping won't tell you that. You would need a port scanner

Thanks for the clarification. For now my client is on the same box as the server so I can get everything working before deploying to my touch screens.

The .200 addresses were throwing me too. I'll check the network configuration tonight and see if it changes anything.

Thanks!

Ok. I discovered that I did have the wrong ip address in the network config box. I mistakenly interpretted the description of the DNS Server field as that of my DNS server, not the ip address of THIS computer. Oops.

I restarted MLServer and noticed some things.

1. The VALUE of variables that referred to .200 are now changed to .210
2. The variable NAMES that had .200 in the name have not changed. I am assuming these were created at some point in the installation process. Is there a way to update those without reinstalling everything?

3. The WeatherLobby variables are still NOT updating
4. I'm still NOT getting any emails when MLServer restarts

NEW DISCOVERY - Reviewing the logs when MLServer starts up I see some SMTP MAiler commands. It looks like it is trying to send some emails. I have seen some errors that it couldn't be sent. This latest restart doesn't show any errors, but does show that the state has changed to disconnected. Does this mean that there is not a connection?

Is there a way to copy certain lines of the log? If so, I can post them.

Thanks!

Also - MLWorker is running. When I pull it up, the connection status alternates between "Connecting" and "Closed" every couple of seconds. The worker agent port is set to 6295.

Logging is filling with messages of:
"Attempting to connect to the agent"
"Agent connection has closed"

When I click UPDATE NOW on WeatherLobby, log entries show a SENDTEXT command for the information it is trying to retrieve, but then a message that states "SendCommandError: Failed to send command since Worker has disconnected" after each request.

I also saw "SendText [CheckInternet~192.168.1.210] as client []", followed by "SendCommandError: Failed to send command since Worker has disconnected"

Just as a reminder, 192.168.1.210 is the ML Server.

Thanks!

So that is the issue! MLWorker is not liking something and is not actually connecting to the internet to get the metadata.

Dave P needs to take a look at this.

You have a network issue of some sort. MLWorker is running on the ML Server machine, correct?
Thanks!

Yes. It is running on the ML Server machine.

What is it trying to connect too?

I have tried everything I can think of but still can't get MLWorker to connect.

Does anyone have any more ideas?

Thanks,
Kevin

You mentioned in your voice mail that you are using Microsoft Internet connection services. Does this mean you have to define a proxy server on the PCs that use this service? If yes, then MLWorker will never get to the Internet because there is no way to define a proxy server.

I have not defined a proxy server.

The way it works is that the ML Server box has a static ip address and a static DNS Server (which points to the laptop with the aircard). I guess by virtue of the DNS address it sees the internet and connects.

I am sure the ML Server box connects to the internet as I can pull up web pages, and within MLServer I can download and install MLServer components and even updated to the latest version of MLServer.

Thanks!
