I am a bit lost!

Postby Engerland » Thu Aug 23, 2007 11:35 pm

I currently have a Control4 system but thinking of moving over to a PC based system. I am able to grasp lighting automation but not so easily the audio side.

I'd like to have audio in ~4 rooms of my home. I am just not sure of the options to get it there and by that I mean the best way to select a song in a room (remote or touchpanel or keypad) or the best hardware. With Control4 you have a convenient remote control to select songs. Do I also need four soundcards in a PC to link to each zone if I use J river or use a Russound system for example?

Input would really be appreciated, especially some ideas on an entry to mid level system.

Thank-you in advance for your time.

There are many different ways to accomplish that task.

One:
Put a touchscreen in each room connected to one or more PCs (there are several technical options here)
http://www.cinemaronlineforums.com/wiki ... &section=4

The touchscreen displays the MainLobby client software. Then, for music, the MusicLobby user interface would also be installed within the MainLobby client software.

The touchscreen PC then talks to the Server PC that might have one or more multichannel sound cards. This server pc also runs J River Media Center software which is the music database and audio renderer. The song is selected in the user interface and the instructions are sent by the software to J River to play it and output a configured pair of output channels.

The sound card output channels can then go to either a Russound type audio distribution and amplification system (or Nuvo, or several others). Or, the sound card output channels can go to a simpler multichannel amplifier like

Why are you interested in switching from Control4? Once we know what you don't like, then we can suggest something that might better meet your needs.

Another option to consider is adding a Russound CAV/CAM/CAA unit with keypads or Nuvo Grand Concerto.

Then you'll have access to your music sources in the various rooms.

Wireless tablets or inwall tablets could be used to navigate your music indepth. A remote control could be used for basic transport controls.

As for Control4...a) I am tired of paying for a dealer to carry out simple programming on my system when I have the ability to do it myself...(only lack the software of course). b) I see more functionality in Cinemar such as weather, flexibility in creating your own GUIs etc.

I would need to build up from the ground. The Cinemar architecture document you provided was extremely useful and really helped me see the options.....now I can't see the best options for touchcreens. Nuvo is way to expensive!!!
