What message are you seeing in the log? I am not seeing any of this on my Dune player.

Here is the log from pressing play for one movie twice. If I go thru the Dune itself and browse to any movie and start it, I can then go back thru MLServer and play anything I want.

So
I removed one of my PCs from the Homegroup.
Created a user and password.
Created a share, and gave the user R/W perms.
I went to the directory and gave the user R/W on all the files and sub directories.

Went to Dune.
Browsed to this PC and saw the share.
It failed on Guest login, but joined with the above user/password.

Plays a move from the share.

So, the problem seems to be the homegroup.

Unfortunately, the server I have my movie share on needs to be in the homegroup (I think).
I'll have to sort that out and figure out what to do now.
I suppose I should purchase a NAS that does SMB shares for the movies.

Ok, I was reading some internet forums and found the same issue.

The fix was to run this program
http://www.xtreamer.net/downloads/commu ... nager.aspx
And select Sharing Registy Fix.

Then I rebooted the server.
It still didn't work.
I checked and my Guest account was enabled, so I disabled it.
Still didn't work.
But then I rebooted the Dune.

Boom, it worked. I see all the shares on the movie server and I'm still in the Homegroup.

I'm not sure if it was the guest account or the Sharing Registry Fix.

Good investigation. One for the knowledge book.

I think it was both.
The registry fix permitted sharing to non Homegroup systems while staying in the Homegroup.

The guest acount was the default for dune, but when enabled it had no perms on the share.
Once I disabled it, the Dune would error on log in and let you enter other user/password credentials.
I probably can enable the guest account and give it R/W on the share and the files and it would probably work.

Just as an FYI, I moved the Dune to another room and now its back to not working.
But I haven't had time to mess with it. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think I got mine to work. Tried restarts 3 times already and its steady. This is what I did.

For Windows 7:
I went into my shared drives. I have 6 2TB drives attached to SAS array. They were all shared, but some permissions were messed up and I couldn't change some permissions unless I took ownership. In the end, none of that mattered because to get Dune to connect, you have to disable password protection on the shares. Very easy to do.

I first deleted all the network folders I created on the Dune pointing to the shares. Nothing there. Rebooted the Dune. I then went to my shares and right clicked on properties on one of the drives. Goto sharing tab and click on advanced sharing. Obviously make sure share this folder is checked and give it a name/letter. Goto permissions as Dave pointed out and make sure everyone is listed and full control is checked. Click on apply and ok. Do this for every drive you want to share. On the final drive you want to share, under properties in the sharing tab, goto the bottom and click on the link for network and sharing center. I have the following checked off.
Network Discovery On
File and Print Sharing On
Public Folder Sharing Off
Ignore Media Streaming
I enabled sharing for 40 or 56 bit encryption (I didn't know if the Dune supported 128bit.
Password Protected Sharing Off
Use user accts and pswrds to connect other pc's

I restarted the machine, and Dune plays from each drive. I hope this helps.

Eurotech,
That seems to have worked for me so far.
I had to reboot both the server and the Dune.
But I'm seeing shares again.

And I can still get to the shares from another PC in Homegroup.

I'll play with it a while and see if I lose it again.

Update

I took it off line for a while while I installed a 8x8 HDMI matrix switch.
Now it isn't getting to the shares.

I'll see what I can figure out.

Update
I quit screwing around and built a 16tb NAS.

I used an older computer, installed FreeNas, (2) two port eSATA controllers and (4) 4-bay eSATA enclosures.
I stuffed (16) 2tb Western Digital Red NAS SATA Drivers at Raid 1 into the enclosures for 16tb total.

I don't expect to run out of movie storage for a while. :D

And it works great with the Dune so far.

Now back to archiving.

I finally got the Dune to respond to the "playmovie" command from the plugin. I tried all sorts of methods via nfs but none would work (the only reason I prefer nfs is Dune suggests that this would be faster). Finally, I resorted to smb and the unit works. I suppose the one advantage to smb is it only needs to be enabled in Dune and a guest account with no password has to be created in the NAS.

One issue. Despite the plugin sending "action_on_finish=exit", the movie will continue to loop. When playing via the browser (Dune browser via remote), the play will return to the main menu once completed. This has been checked with a DVD (\VIDEO_TS\VIDEO_TS.IFO) and a Blu-Ray (iso). I searched the Dune options and could not find a setting for this so I suspect the only control is when the plugin sends the http.

Ideas?

action_on_finish has two possible options exit|restart_playback. The Dune documentation also states that

"NOTE: Not all parameters are supported for all file formats. For Blu-ray playback, many parameters are not supported (in particular, black_screen and hide_osd is not supported)."

So maybe that is what is happening.

I'm wondering if anyone has plans to make a front end for DVDlobby that will work on the Dune? I'd rather have a DVDlobby interface on the device (screen) if at all possible.

It would be possible to write a Dune plugin that would present a DVDLobby like interface on the Dune. The Dune SDK supports that. It is not a trivial task however and would take some time to write and test. Given everything else that is on the table I think we'll wait a while before looking into this.
