Cannot Connect to SQL Server

Postby colhemm » Mon Mar 23, 2015 12:57 pm

Hi, After some recent updates to MLServer my set became unreliable and often failed to connect. i tried everything i new to fix it but nothing made any difference. So i then tried a fresh install but still get the same problem. Cannot connect to SQL server, Waiting for SQL server to start.

All i have installed is SQL Server/.NET 4, MLServer 4.0 and Mainlobby 4.0 Client.

Thanks
Colin

It is impossible for me to know what is going on without seeing it. Install TeamViewer 9 and email me your TeamViewer ID and password then I will remote in and look at your system.

Thanks for the quick response and fast fix. The only problem i have now is i cannot connect the MainLobby Web Designer from a remote PC, i've turned off all firewalls but still nothing.

Then there is something on your network blocking UDP traffic. I would have to remote in and experiment.

One quick test you could try is to append ,1433 to the end of the SQL connection string. Go into the Settings on the Designer and change the SQL server

from <<servername>>\CinemarSQL

to <<servername>>\CinemarSQL,1433

and see if that does anything.

Then the only solution to the issue is for me to remote into both your MLServer PC and the PC you are trying to run the Designer on so that I can see what settings on one or both of the machines is causing the problem. I will need your Team Viewer 9 info for both PCs.

Resolved - network firewall rules were not allowing for dynamic IP ports on SQL Server. Switched SQL Server to only use the fixed port 1433.

Dave - I I have the same issue. What do you open up to enable dynamic ports over the network or how do I go in and change to the fixed port?
Thanks!

Got it;

If anyone wants a very good set of instruction on how to change SQL from dynamic to static ports, go here. In my case, TCP/IP protocol was turned off. I turned that on and restarted the SQL instance. I then had to delete the dynamic port and enter a static port under the TCP/IP protocol. I then had to open that same port in the firewall of the MLS machine. I also had to append the SQL path in Designer with the same port number. Like magic, Designer connected.

Thanks!
