Micro PC

Postby sonypoolplr » Sat May 23, 2015 7:54 am

I just ordered a mico pc that has a hdmi output so I can hook it up to my tv and start streaming movies, netflix etc., and I was wondering what I will need to install on the box to get DVDLobby and the Netfix apps to work on it?

Thank you

It is a Dell Inpiron 3050. I had some money to spend from a gift card, and I have had good experiences with Dell in the past.

Just a regular PC. You'll need the AVAgent and a movie player like Media Player Classic.

Thanks Dave. After I get it se up, and I put a ripped movie onto my server I will probably be back with more questions. Not becasue MLServer is hard to setup, but because I always seem to have a few problems setting up new services. :D

I'd be interested in your experiences.

Specifically when playing a movie file with 5.1 or greater surround. The thing to look for is voices out of sync from lips.

For me that's what separates the men from the boys with players.

Sony,
Wondering if you could post your experience with this micro PC setup? Was memory an issue? Any stuttering or li-sync issues? I am interested in the same solution so that I can get Cinemar controlled Netflix to stream on TV.

Dave,
Perhaps you can help with a couple of other questions:
1. In a setup like this (i.e. micro PC), is there a need for an anti-virus (e.g. Norton) software – since the PC will be running Silverlight via IE Explorer, and is technically streaming from internet?

2. If I had to use the MLServer PC for the same function (Netflix/Silverlight), do I need anti-virus as mentioned above, or is windows firewall still sufficient?

Thanks in advance.

I didn't have any problems with it that I noticed. I will say the hard drive space is a little small. I am still trying to get win 10 on it, as the installer wants 16gb free to complete the install.

Any PC within the last 5 years has more than enough horsepower for streaming Netflix.

IMHO all 3rd party anti-virus software is a waste of money and cpu resources. But that's me. Windows comes with a very capable firewall and Windows Defender is more than adequate. Especially if you are talking about a PC that is headless and no human routinely uses. PCs get all virused up because people do things to them that they shouldn't.

Thanks Sony, and Dave,

The micro PCs I saw have Win 10 already installed, so perhaps a good option. But it seems, as Dave suggested, for now running Netflix/Silverlight on my MLServer (with Windows firewall enabled, as it is today) is the best solution, specially being that the MLServer I built a few months ago is quite beefy.

I will post my results if I find anything strange.

Thanks again - this was very helpful.
