Wireless connectivity

Postby CinemarDave » Tue Sep 23, 2014 6:00 pm

I've been having some wireless issue with my Open Mesh WAP for a while now. I did some digging and I saw that my Open-Mesh WAP was using channel 11 on the 2.4GHz network. I downloaded a little app called Vistumbler and ran it on my laptop to analyze the wireless. What I found was that I have a lot of wireless networks in my area and nearly all of them were also using channel 11. That was leading to a lot of interference on the radios. Since no other wireless network in my area was using channel 1 (channels 1, 6 and 11 are the best to use) I switched the Open Mesh WAP to use Channel 1 instead of 11 on the 2.4GHz radio. Since then my wireless has been a whole heck more stable. Might be something worth looking into for your install as this applies to all wireless routers and not just Open Mesh products.

You can get a copy of Vistubmler from https://www.vistumbler.net/

My solution was to move out into the woods with no neighbors to bother my WiFi network :)

Or you could build a big Faraday cage over the house!

;)
