Blue Ray Server

Postby bobbym » Thu Jun 25, 2009 10:42 am

Hi guys,

I'm getting ready to build a new HTPC (Blue Ray Server). I would like to here back from you guys that have already done this and get some advice on hardware and software recommendations.

1-How Much Computer do I Need.
2-Video Card with true 1080p HDMI out
3- Hard Drive Setup

Thanks,
Bob M.

Here is everything you ever needed and perhaps more about HTPC builds.

Blurays are BIG!!! If i where you i would build a big, bad ass, top notch htpc and not worry about hard drive space as much on the actual htpc. Then i would build an unraid server. Start out with just three hd's and add them as you need. It is an awesome product (unraid that is). I have been using two of them to store my dvds and blurays for several years now and i couldnt be happier.

OS doesn't really matter. XP, Vista, Windows 7. The player is what matters and your choices are Arcsoft TMT or PowerDVD. Both have the pros and cons.

Surprisingly, it doesn't require that much processor muscle to render blu-ray. I use a couple of these http://www.logicsupply.com/products/mp45_bdr for playback along with PowerDVD. I second the recommendation for Unraid - I use one of their preconfigured servers http://www.lime-technology.com/joomla/products/md-1510-server to stream my blu-rays. Can stream 2 at a time as well as backup another simultaneously (my extent of performance testing). Using the PowerDVD plugin, I can launch a movie from DVDLobby on either of the systems from any PC running the MainLobby client. Works great!
